COVID-19: Cemeteries and crematorium update

North East Lincolnshire Council’s bereavement services team has made a number of changes to how they operate following the latest guidance from central government.

Funerals are still taking place as there is currently no ban on public gatherings, but the following advice is in place:

  • Families should restrict attendance to close friends and family to keep the number of people in the chapel to a minimum
  • There are restrictions on the use of waiting rooms and people are asked to wait in cars or outside the building
  • Web casting is available at Grimsby Crematorium and will be encouraged for all services
  • Staff will seat groups at respectful distances from each other inside the chapel
  • Stringent cleaning measures are in place.

The crematorium office will close to the public on Monday, please call or email instead Email bereavementservices@nelincs.gov.uk or telephone 01472 324869.

The service will keep ashes for longer and arrange with funeral directors to collect them at appointed times. Services including the scattering or burial and ashes are postponed until further notice.

Remember: Stay at home if you have coronavirus symptoms. Stay at home if you have either:
    • A high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
    • A new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual).
This advice is particularly important for people who:
    • are 70 or over
    • have a long-term condition
    • are pregnant
    • have a weakened immune system.

Our response to the COVID-19 outbreak is changing daily as we monitor the latest advice from the Government and Public Health England.

The situation is changing daily and we will continue to keep these decisions under review.
